Sm02 | 2010: THE CHALLENGE OF EMERGING FRUIT TREE PESTS IN THE MEDITERRANEAN FREE-TRADE AREA
Download Final programme
WELCOME
Following the guidelines already drawn up in the 1995 Barcelona Declaration by the European Union (EU) and by the Mediterranean countries, a comprehensive Euro-Mediterranean partnership was established in order to turn the Mediterranean into a common area of peace, stability and prosperity through the reinforcement of political dialogue and security, an economic and financial partnership and a social, cultural and human partnership.
Within this context, the establishment of a free trade area of agricultural products in the Mediterranean was envisaged in compliance with the World Trade Organization (WTO) obligations, before 2010 as the final deadline. Even if trade in agricultural products will be liberalized step by step, as will trade in services, the risk of spreading existing harmful organisms in new areas of the Mediterranean basin as well as the threat of invasive organisms in the Region cannot be predicted in socio-economic terms.
Therefore, it is essential to be prepared to this important and imminent event, putting in place common and harmonized strategies, adequate systems of information between different countries, surveillance of the areas, improvement of the health and quality of domestic production, control of materials in export.
In the past 25 years, CIHEAM/MAIB has highly contributed to the improvement of fruit crops and to the control of pest entrance and spread in the region or among the Mediterranean countries through training of executives, applied research and network actions in the region thereby implementing international cooperation programmes in order to harmonize protocols for pest monitoring and control and for the certification of propagating material of fruit crops (citrus, grapevine, olive, stone fruits, palms).
The seminar on '2010: the challenge of emerging fruit tree pests and pathogens in the Mediterranean free trade area' in the framework of IHC 2010 represents a unique opportunity for the horticulture research community to share knowledge on the main emerging pests which may soon threat the Mediterranean fruit tree industry and will surely have a great impact on the technical actions which should soon be taken by all the surrounding countries.
CIHEAM/MAIB is pleased to associate with global horticulture organizations to raise awareness about a multi-continental issue and to mobilize more attention at the Mediterranean level.
