Symposia are two- to three-day meetings on a special topic under the responsibility of conveners, as in any regular ISHS symposia. Each symposium includes invited and offered oral presentations and posters. The conveners, in collaboration with the scientific committee, will select abstracts for oral and poster presentation. Manuscripts will be published in Acta Horticulturae. To see the full programme and up-to-date information about each symposium click on the respective acronym.

WELCOME

The Berry Symposium will be held during the 28th International Horticultural Congress, Lisboa 2010, a leading international conference for horticultural scientists.
Berries (e.g. strawberry, raspberry, blueberry, blackberry, black and red currants, and minor berries) are emerging crops with high economic value. Their cultivation has expanded all over the world and can be found under different growing conditions and using diverse cultural techniques. Berry fruits are very appealing and attract everyone's attention, but also contain bioactive compounds with an important beneficial impact on human health. The theme of Symposium will promote the discussion about how berries can be developed, grown and marketed in systems including small growers and large corporations. The Scientific Program comprises 3-4 days of oral sessions and panel presentations, as well as lectures by world class invited speakers and one-day of technical visits.

The IHC2010 Berry Symposium will also be the final event for the 5years of activities within the COST Action 863 "Euroberry" (www.euroberry.it), a research network supported by EU and involving scientists from 31 EU countries. We are planning this unique opportunity for the members of Euroberry to interact with colleagues from all over the world.

We invite you to join a great event you should not miss. We hope to see you in Lisbon (Portugal) in August 2010.

PROGRAMME AND ORGANIZATION

The Symposium will be organized into 7 topic sessions, from 1.5 to 2.0 hours. Each section will have one invited lecture (30 min), to introduce the topic of the session and report on the main scientific approaches now used. This will be followed by selected scientific presentations, 15 minutes each. These were selected from the abstracts submitted by the symposium scientific committee. The lecture and scientific presentations will be managed by the Section Chairman.

After the presentations there will be a join discussion period with short-oral presentations up to 1.5 hours. The discussion will be managed by a discussion leader who will introduce the discussion, and be supported by 2-3 young members, who will promote the discussion by asking questions to the authors of the presentations. The Scientific Committee hopes that this will encourage extended discussions in which all everybody will take part. Berry symposium will have three poster presentations sessions after lunch. Section Chairmen and discussion leaders will ensure that the programme stays within its allotted time, lead the discussion, make sure the discussions flow, and include less experienced people in the discussions. Each section will have a Rapporteur who will assist the Section Chairman and Discussion Leader and record the discussions, so that they can be summarized. The discussion summaries will be included in the Acta Horticulturae volume of the symposium.

COST support
The IHC2010 Berry Symposium will also be the final Workshop of the COST863 Euroberry project. This will give the EU project a very large visibility. It will allow all the knowledge developed during the last 5 years of the COST863 activities to be shared with our colleagues throughout the world. For this reason the COST863 Management Committee has decided to allocate a large budget to support the travel and accommodation costs for 1 EU COST delegate for each of the 33 EU countries that have signed COST863 Memorandum of Understanding (http://w3.cost.esf.org/index.php?id=181&action_number=863 ), as well as costs for International Invited Lectures, Section Chairman and Discussion Leaders. Furthermore, financial support is expected the local organizers and also for the publication costs of Acta Horticulturae. Because of this support, the IHC2010 organizer has reduced the Congress registration fee by 50% for delegates and experts invited by the EU COST office.

Special session: Industry: "Needs of berry industry"
During the IHC2010 Berry symposium, there will be a special session specifically addressed to promote the discussion of berry research and its applications to berry industry. This session will be mostly managed by experts and operators in the berry industry. This event will help to guarantee a larger participation of experts from the technical, productive and commercial sectors.
